The Simeone Museum In Photos And How It's Different

Located just outside of Philadelphia’s International Airport, Dr. Frederick Simeone has made his comprehensive collection of sports and racing cars available to the public, and boy are we glad he did.

As someone who struggles to get excited about cars sitting still, my expectations were tempered by the fact that most automotive museums offer a tremendous let-down in exchange for $35. They’re often stuffy, stale, and the overly-restored examples remind me why collector and enthusiast are separate terms.

However, the Simeone Foundation is different: the cars don’t look like trailer queens; they’ve been used, raced, repaired, and then parked — but only for a little while. You see, the museum has developed an innovative program where they drive their cars on a regular basis. Amazing! It’s called Demo Days and poor planning resulted in my visit not falling on one of those days.

Either way, the museum is a fantastic gathering of some of the most significant and interesting sports and racing cars this side of the Mille Miglia, Goodwood, or Pebble Beach. The cars are predominantly owned by Dr. Simeone himself, however some vehicles appeared on loan from various owners or were part of an exhibit — one of Jalopnik’s own staffers recently had their vehicle on display for the museum’s Legends of Japan exhibit.

Some of the cars pictured below include (in no particular order): 1962 Ferrari 250 GTO, 1957 Ferrari 250 Testa Rossa, 1933 Alfa Romeo 8C 2300 MM Spyder, 1936 Bugatti Type 57G Tank (also the winning-est Bugatti at Le Mans), 1958 Aston Martin DBR1, 1964 Shelby Daytona Coupe, 1963 Corvette Grand Sport, 1936/48 Delahaye 135SS, 1966 Ford GT40 Mk II, 1967 Ford GT40 Mk IV.
